Hi, may I ask how old you are, if you don't mind? My friend is in similar situation and aged 19. I will tell them about you. Have you got any hobbies? Maybe you would like to chat to him if you are similar age and share interests.

You must find it very hard to cope? Do you manage to get out much or have many visitors?

I have a friend who is in a wheelchair after a car crash. She goes through months where she is so down she does not want to see us, we try to visit her and we are never unpleasant or rude to her, one of the things she hates is when people tell her what to do. She keeps reminding us that she is intelligent, she did very well at school, high grades, a member of the high i.q. organisation MENSA, very accomplished, and she has a great brain, so she is very upset when people assume they know better than her or she needs their input or being told what to do. She sometimes gets someone visit who means well but starts doing that and it sets her back with depression for ages, part of the problem is she is stuck at home on her own a lot with a lot of time to think about it and get hurt over whatever.

My neighbour is in a wheelchair and finds it tough, but she has tremendous courage and humour. Never glum or miserable, never moaning or complaining.  One thing I find hard and I've had to bring this to her attention is this. She forgets that other people work and get out and about. She thinks because she is at home watching television all day it is the same for us. She rings me for a long chat and gets annoyed because I am out. She rings me for a long chat and gets annoyed if I have company and can't chat to her. She rings me when I am in the bath or eating or whatever and still expects an instant answer and lots of my time. Weekends are the worst as these are the two days I do not work. She thinks that means I will be going over to hers all day or glued to the phone all day, but I have family, friends and chores and fun to do, things which are far better for me than visiting her or listening to her all day. I find the best way to deal with it is to tell her I will ring her for a chat when I can - and I do - but I make sure it is short. She sort of puts up with it being just one chat and a short chat because she knows she won't get more.
