I've got a very demanding set of parents - they both expect me to be at their beck and call and drop everything or change my plans to suit them.  I knew how selfish they were when I was in hospital, laid up with a broken leg, and they left a message at the hospital with a nurse to tell me that they were disgusted with me because I had not sent mother a birthday card!  No thought to how I had no visitors, no help, could not get out of bed etc. Sometimes it is best to distance yourself, in the end that is what I did.

My family were so selfish and demanding that I had to cut ties with them altogether when old enough. The thing I've found which disgusts me and upsets me is when I speak to someone about it - years later - in the cold light of day - and explain this to them - I get ridiculous comments like "well your mother was very wrong to do that to  you but I am sure if you go back to her and explain to her that was wrong she would understand that now".  As if my mother had no idea that starving me and beating me was wrong and needs me to point this out to her. As soon as you mention the word mother or father or whatever the person you are speaking to gets it into their head that they cannot possibly be as bad as you say they are because no parent ever is, all parents are loving. They could not be more wrong. Read the book by David Peltzer - A Boy Called It. His mother was the ultimate in cruelty, she did not have a decent bone in her body, even social services did not get it when he told them. In a way that bit where people do not listen and accept what you are telling them is almost as bad as the original treatment.

This is part of why women who get raped or molested are not in a rush to come forward and tell people. They know some will say it was their own fault or they are making it up or whatever.
